Sleeping without a pillow – is it “natural”?
I’ve been reading a lot about the benefits and concerns about sleeping with and without pillows to support one’s back and/or neck and I’ve become somewhat nervous and confused about this.
In one article, I read that sleeping without a pillow causes tension and dis-alignment of the neck and spine. In another article, I read that sleeping without a pillow is the “natural” way to sleep and that a person will position him or herself during their sleep to find the correct position to sleep that is suitable for his or her specific needs.
In my case, I sleep without a pillow.
Even since I was little, my mother put me to bed with a pillow or two under my head. However, sometime during the night, I would always either push the pillow(s) off the bed or wake up with my head actually under the pillow.
This still happens every night and I don’t know if I should be worrying about my spine and neck or not, although for now it seems fine.
For all I know, I do this unconsciously, so I don’t see how there is anything I can do about this (or if I even need to).
Any suggestions, tips, or just plain and simple insight?
I have a body pillow, but it’s always at the side of my bed, against the wall. It doesn’t do much at all. I kind of stray away from it in my sleep, in a sense.
sleeping and back pain?
`i am 16 weeks pregnant. Every morning I wake up and my back is just killing me! I sleep on my left side, with a body pillow in between my legs, to give natural hip positioning, and use support pillows for my back. And it still hurts alot when I wake up, and gradually fades off as the morning goes on. Did anyone else have this, what helped you?
question about pillows and sleeping better?
I was wandering the pillow section in a department store while waiting for my mum to shop for bathroom towels. Anway i say all these different kinds of pillows – will they make my sleeping experiences more comfy? You know like body pillows, neck rolls, lumbar support pillows – and how do i know how fluffy i need my pillow to be if I am a stomach sleeper (I sleep on my stomach or sometimes on my side)? What are your experiences with different kinds of pillows? Also can I use a lumbar support pillow for when Im sitting in a chair reading at my des as well (for my lower back)? What have been your experiences?
What kind of pillow did you use for support while sleeping?
I’m 23 weeks and for the past few weeks I’ve been using a varied configuration of throw pillows from around the house as belly support and between my knees when I sleep but throughout the night, as I toss or turn, the pillows come loose and I wake up sore. My neck hurts, my back hurts, my obliques hurt. I know there are pillows out there specifically made for pregnant women to sleep more comfortably. Did anyone find these helpful? Is there a shape or brand thats better than another?
